Esophagus tear forces early stoppage at UFC Fight Night 74

Last nights UFC main event ended abruptly in what looked like a Shoulder/Neck injury, Oliveira fell to the mat and the ref jumped in to stop the fight early in the first round. Oliveira lay in the cage and was eventually stretchered out.

After the event Oliveira said

“I injured my neck in training, but did physical therapy and thought everything was fine,” Oliveira told MMAFighting.com, “but when I fell against the cage everything went numb, I couldn’t feel my body.”

but today the official cause has been released and it is a strange one

“Dr. Jeff Davidson, a UFC medical consultant who worked the event, today told MMAjunkie that Oliveira suffered a micro-tear of his esophagus in the fight.”

Not everyday an injury like this pops up in the Octagon, untreated this injury can be life threatening as it allows foods and fluids to leak into the chest cavity and lungs.

Obviously with the way the fight ended a rematch would be the next step and Oliveira wants it, saying “I trained really hard for this fight, I would like a rematch because there was no fight. I got injured literally the first time I attacked.”

But Holloway has said he would like a fight against Frankie Edgar in Hawaii.

What do you think, Rematch or should Holloway continue his way up the ladder?
