JDS VS Overeem at UFC Fight Night Orlando

A heavyweight clash between Junior Dos Santos and Alistair Overeem has been set for December 19 at UFC Fight Night in Florida.

JDS a former UFC heavyweight champion and formidable staple of the division has started to make his way back into title contention.

JDS beat Cain Velasquez in just over a minute to claim the UFC heavyweight title at the end of 2012 but has since lost both rematches, most recently JDS defeated Stipe Miocic by unanimous decision setting up this fight with Overeem that is effectively 3 years in the making.

At one point JDS seemed unstoppable, going on a 10 fight win streak and finishing most opponents by KO or TKO. This was apparently cemented with his quick KO of Velasquez at the first UFC on Fox show in 2011.

Since then Velasquez has became JDS kryptonite having lost the title to Velasquez and then the rubber match, with a win over Overeem, JDS will be looking to get back into title contention.

JDS currently holds a KO victory over the current champion Fabrício Werdum, defeating him in his debut at UFC 90. Having beat Werdum via KO he has to fancy his chances in winning a rematch and reclaiming the heavyweight gold.

Overeem seems to be getting back into the groove after some setbacks, most notably his two KO losses in a row to Bigfoot Silva and Travis Browne.  Now with two wins in a row against Stefan Struve and Big Country, Overeem is looking to finally get a shot at UFC gold.

Overeem much like JDS is a formidable figure, coming into the UFC on a seven fight win streak and looking like he would go straight to the top quickly. Overeem defeated one of the UFC’s biggest stars in Brock Lesnar on his debut and his previous win was current heavyweight champion Fabrício Werdum.

This set him up well but he stumbled, losing the heavyweight title eliminator by KO to Bigfoot Silva and then losing by KO again to Travis Browne, since then he has went 3-1 and is almost certainly looking to get a title shot with a win over JDS.

This should be a great fight against 2 huge figures in the UFC heavyweight division and one fight that may pave the way for future of the heavyweight division, leading to either a title shot for the winner or to another title eliminator which is more probable as the heavyweight division is stacked with fighters on winning streaks.

Exciting times for fans of the heavyweights, UFC Orlando takes place  Saturday, Dec. 19 at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida and features a main event of Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos.
